Diverse American composers reflect on freedom, equality, and our shared longings for peace, and the promise of the words enshrined on the Statue of Liberty.
The program features a recently discovered work by African American composer Florence Price, a setting of powerful testimony by a WWII veteran for marriage equality by Asian American composer Melissa Dunphy, letters and poems by veterans about American and Iraqi fathers attempts to comfort war-torn families, the soaring voices of Craig Carnahan’s setting of Armistice poetry, plus moving works affirming both diverse identities and our common humanity.
We sing for all who served, all who suffered, and all whose desire to serve has been met with discrimination on the basis of their race, sexuality, gender identity or expression, through segregation, exclusion, DADT, to the Transgender service ban.
