At the heart of Enduring Echoes is Robert Stern’s monumental Shofar, returning to the stage seven years after its planned March 2020 performance was canceled three days before the concert as the COVID-19 pandemic brought public performances to a halt.

With a libretto by Catherine Madsen drawing on biblical and modern sources, Shofar explores covenant—its breaking and restoration—and the human possibility of reconciliation and renewal. Rooted in Jewish tradition yet universal in its reach, the work carries particular resonance at a time of renewed antisemitism and division. Its journey from brokenness toward wholeness speaks to our shared responsibility to heal what has been fractured and imagine a more compassionate world.

The concert also serves as a memorial to three remarkable Massachusetts musicians we lost before the COVID-19 pandemic: composer Robert Stern, baritone Sanford Sylvan, and baritone Donald Wilkinson. Their artistry and contributions to the musical life of our community continue to resonate.

The program also features Ralph Vaughan Williams’ luminous Five Mystical Songs and Johannes Brahms’ poignant Nänie, Op. 82, exploring themes of covenant, love, remembrance, reconciliation, and enduring hope.
